Today, W. Murray SANFORD our friend, colleague, and pillar of our institution passed away. Murray SANFORD was our Sports Director from 2006 to 2013, and our Competition Director from 2003 to 2013. SANFORD was also the Director of our Atlanta International Prep Classic (ATLANTA CLASSIC), an annual youth (14-18) Track & Field competition held at GA Tech since 2004. Murray SANFORD traveled to all continents except for Oceania to represent the ATLANTA 1996, and he attended the Montreal 1976, Moscow 1980, Atlanta 1996, and Beijing 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Today the ATLANTA 1996 is what it is because of Murray SANFORD's support, vision, commitment to excellence, and hard work. Your memory will be part of the ATLANTA 1996 forever. REST-in-PEACE Murray!
W. Murray SANFORD, was born July 20, 1941, in Lambert, Mississippi, and died November 9, 2013 in Marietta, Georgia. He graduated from Marks (Mississippi) High School and Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. He taught history and coached track and field in Greenwood and Greenville, Mississippi and Pebblebrook and Lassiter High Schools in Georgia. He served his country as a US Marine Corps Reservist.
Murray SANFORD was a vital member of the track & field community in Georgia, he formerly served as president of both USATF Georgia and the Atlanta Track Club. He was honored by the USATF National Officials Committee in 1999 and was the Officials Chair in 2003. He was honored by USATF Georgia with the President’s Award in 2013.
Murray SANFORD, was an inaugural inductee to the USATF Officials Hall of Fame. SANFORD also received the Andy Bakjian Outstanding Official Award in 2005, the highest honor a USATF Certified Official may receive. The Bakjian Award is presented to those who have contributed far beyond the normal range of activities expected of an official and have made major contributions to track and field.
