4th Lausanne Summit - Rio de Janeiro 2011
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (November 8 - 13, 2011)
During the 4th Lausanne Summit - Rio de Janeiro 2011, Dr. Marc-Daniel Gutekunst and Richard Butcher were glad to see Bárbara Leôncio and Jefferson Liberato Lucindo athletes from Rio de Janeiro whom the ATLANTA DITC sponsored in 2007 to come and compete at the ATLANTA CLASSIC. Both Barbara and Jefferson are training in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The 4th Lausanne Summit – Rio de Janeiro 2011 focused on Olympic Legacy and the link between sustainable urban development and international sport. The theme of the Summit was on how to ensure the Games result in community and environmentally sustainable legacies.
This year in Rio, participants had the opportunity to discuss ‘urban legacies’: how the legacy of the Games can be used to contribute to a healthier and better socially integrated population. In addition, as Rio will be hosting the Rio+20 UN Conference next year, 4th Lausanne Summit – Rio de Janeiro 2011 enabled WUOC members to consider the direct input their organization can have in the Rio + 20 Conference. Discussions focused on how sport, through the Olympic Games, can promote sustainable development.
Attending the Summit offered a unique opportunity to meet Mayors of former, current and upcoming host cities of the Olympic Games. In addition, the 4th Lausanne Summit – Rio de Janeiro 2011 was attended by a number of different International Olympic Committee (IOC) Members and staff, as well as international sports professionals. The WUOC General Assembly was held during the 4th Lausanne Summit – Rio de Janeiro 2011 during which an update on ATLANTA DITC’s London 2012 WUOC House was given.
Out of the forty six (46) cities that have hosted the Olympic Games since 1896 and cities that won the right to host future Olympic Games (Summer and Winter) and Youth Olympic Games (Summer and Winter), 24 are now members of the WUOC. There are an additional five (5) invited Member cities.
