On August 17th, 2008, Mbango Etone, a Cameroon national, won her second Olympic Gold medal in triple jump at 15m 39, and her first Gold medal in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
At the recommendation of the ATLANTA DITC, NYC 2012 invited her in December 2004 to come to the United States as one of eight Olympians (along with Ian Thorpe and Nadia Comaneci) honored at Times Square's New Year's Eve Ceremony by the New York City 2012 Olympic Bid Committee. After the 2005 New Year's festivities, Mbango Etone came to visit the ATLANTA DITC. While in Atlanta she trained at GA Tech and worked with Coach Nat PAGE. The visit was highlighted by an appearance at Tisha Waller's Ashford Park Elementary School. Ms. Waller, a two time U.S. Olympian high jumper herself, graciously invited Mbango Etone to speak to her class. DeKalb County CEO and DeKalb County Commissioners officially proclaimed Friday January 7, 2005, to be Françoise Mbango Etone Day.
While in Atlanta, she also met with Ambassador Andrew Young, Co-Chair of the ATLANTA DITC and Chairman of GoodWorks International who concluded Mbango Etone's Atlanta visit and short term training. The Olympic champion explained her interest in furthering her education and spoke to Ambassador Andrew Young regarding Atlanta's educational opportunities. Ambassador Young's responded by explaining that it is the mission of the ATLANTA DITC to provide educational avenues to training athletes.
